Both RF XL and Modular RF allow for the cost and carbon competitive production of a wider range of heavy oil and oil sands deposits than any other technology. These technologies open up a new paradigm for heavy oil and oil sands production including;
- Much lower capital expenditure (CAPEX), which is both mobile and scalable;
- Much lower operating expense (OPEX), with less inflation when oil prices increase; and
- Synergies with SAGD which ensure that existing procedures and valuable lessons learned from many years of oil sands production can be leveraged.
Acceleware RF heating is also simple and quick to deploy and in comparison to other production technologies is expected to be much faster to first oil.
Acceleware’s RF heating is estimated to reduce both CAPEX and OPEX of oil sands and heavy oil production in comparison with SAGD by over 70% and 40% respectively, but of critical note is that it can also allow for extraction from reservoirs that, until now, have not been considered viable to produce. This means that in addition to the billions of dollars that can be saved compared to current production costs, up to ten times more barrels of previously untapped Alberta oil could now be produced using this innovation.
The range of untapped geologies and reservoir formations that RF heating can produce include:
- Deep or thin reservoirs: RF heating can be used at depths and in formations where steam is not viable.
- Cracked and fractured reservoirs, such as carbonates: RF heating efficiently delivers heat to the reservoir directly around the antenna and does not suffer heat loss through cracks or fractures.
- Shallow reservoirs: RF heating can operate with or without a cap rock or other containment structure required for steam.
Equally compelling is our ability to get this innovation to market very quickly. RF XL is very simple and quick to deploy, uses proven power industry technologies and relies on down hole equipment and processes that are already industry standard, allowing development to be accelerated and streamlined. This means RF XL can be fully commercialized and available on the market by 2020. We also expect that the technologies will allow us to be significantly faster to first oil when compared to SAGD and other enhanced oil recovery techniques.
When compared to steam-based production techniques such as SAGD, Acceleware RF technologies deliver broad improvements in environmental performance in addition to dramatically better economics, including;
- GHG reductions ranging from;
- 23% reduction immediately available based on Alberta grid power in 2017,
- 56% reduction based on Alberta's grid power plans for 2030, and
- the potential for 100% reduction when using renewable sources of electricity.
- No external water is required.
- A much smaller physical footprint than other approaches to thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
